That Dude is a Witch!

What do you think of when you picture a witch?  A woman riding on a broomstick with green skin and a hooked nose hovering over a cauldron of enchanted spells?  Is her magic inherently sinful because it is mysterious?  Does she deserve to be burned for her sorcery?  Is she ultimately a hag that needs to be disposed of and kept quarantined from the purity of society?

For most people there are two obvious connotations when it comes to witches.  That they are bad, and that she is a she.  In our minds, witches are women.

But for The Munch, who is somewhat familiar with the idea of a witch in that they are evil characters like monsters, assumes that witches are boys.  According to Munch, only boys are really naughty, so therefor witches have to be boys.

When I put Munch to bed at night we have a ritual where I make up a story to tell her.  Lately she has wanted me to tell stories of witches, but she keeps correcting me when I give the witch feminine descriptives.

Munch: No Mamma! It is HIS broomstick.  Witches are boys!!!

Even though it is hard for me to personally imagine a witch as anything but female, I think it is pretty bad ass that The Munch thinks witches are dudes.  Not because of some reverse sexism or anything, but more because it shows how children can have a totally unique understanding of a concept before they are conditioned by societal expectations.  It is proof how we can change perception by avoiding indoctrinating our kids to think one way, or maintain the presumptions and stereotypes of the present.  That there is vast potential in re-imagininng culture by being hyper aware of the messaging we pass on to the young.  Totally… why can’t a witch have a love rod and some bing bongs?
