I think it would be pretty cool to be a prodigy. Yeah maybe you would be kind of weird, and probably have a stupid haircut and a hard time making friends. But who cares? You would be too busy practicing the violin, or piano, or doing math equations or something. What is the point of being social when you are a kid anyway? Going to stupid parties, getting laid, or smoking pot listening to The Cure… That is all a waste of time compared to being an absolute genius at one thing… like spelling vocabulary words or chess. Okay fine, “nerd alert,” but that is only because we were all just “regular” kids, so intrinsically haters.
It turns out I was not a prodigy which is a real bummer. I thought maybe I would grow up to be one, but then I realized the criteria for a prodigy is being a child performing at an adult level. So I am sure your can imagine how disappointed I was to realize that after all these years of practice, I am not a prodigy masturbator 🙁
The thing that I find most fascinating about being a prodigy is how freeing it would be for your life’s path to be so clear. It is not like Mozart ever had a crisis of identity in his 20’s, wondering what career to pursue and regretting he didn’t pay more attention in Latin class. He never sat in his room staring at the cracks in the ceiling, thinking they looked like a rabbit and wanting to cry while wondering what to do with his existence. There was no existential crisis, feeling like he was making the wrong choices and maybe he should have been more serious about his poems and scrapbooking. No. Mozart knew he was put on this earth to play piano and that was what he did. He could feel is excellence at an early age, and prove it with practice, dedication, and focus as the years went by. To be a virtuoso at one skill must lift the burden of choice by gifting you with the obvious direction of brilliance.
But when you are okay at a lot of things, then what do you do with your life? How do you know if you are making the right choices? Of course you should pursue your passions, but I think many of us have more than one thing we are zealous about. More than one thing we can do pretty well. Not the best maybe, but not the worst either.
There is something about too much choice that is paralyzing.
Even though I don’t necessarily want The Munch to be a total dork, I still have high hopes she will be a prodigy. So far her potential seems to be in singing “Wheels on the Bus Go Round and Round” and yelling “Mamma” when I am trying to focus on something.
