I think I am a good friend. But I am sure some of my friends think I could be a better friend. But I think they could be better friends to me too. It is hard to know what kind of friend to be to someone, because I think it is easier to be the kind of friend you wish you had. I am the kind of friend I want them to be to me even if I am not the kind of friend they want me to be. Does that make any sense? Will you be my friend?
When you love someone, it is easy to tell them “I love you” but it is not always easy to show them. Showing love is complicated because we all have our unique ways of displaying affection. I am the type of person who is a giver. When I love you, I will feed you, take care of you, listen to your problems, support you, and give you the shirt off my back. Because it is sweaty, and I can just wear this one.
But where I probably fail people is that I seem flakey and I don’t always speak my mind. Because I am a pleaser, I want to say “yes” even when I should have said “I can’t.” And though I am good at giving advice and being upfront about how I feel about your life, I am not always that direct about how I feel. That is not because I am trying to be deceptive, but because I don’t want to create drama or conflict. It is easier to make people happy than deal with the complications of revealing yourself fully.
We all have shortcomings that create energetic confusion and resentment, but I think the key to a good friendship is acknowledging them. Addressing imperfections and being willing to evolve and move forward. Forgiveness is the key to loving someone. And also having an open enough mind to recognize that they way the love you may be different than how you love them, but that doesn’t mean it is any less valid. I do things for people they would never do for me, but they do things I would never do for them. We can’t only value the things we do.
But then again, sometimes friends just suck and don’t even bother being the type of friend they want, and are just the type of friend that blows.
“Hey dolly. You want to be my bestie? My other babies on the chair are being all exclusive and bitchy.”
