I went to see Louis CK’s standup last night and laughed until I needed to change my underwear. Not that he was that funny, they were just really dirty. They say laughter is the best medicine, but I bet lot of people have died believing that because I am pretty sure penicillin is. But even though laughter can’t heal your stab wound, it can make you feel a lot better while bleeding to death.
Although sense of humor is subjective, there are still some universal truths when it comes to humor. Farts, masturbation, and diarrhea. Everyone laughs at that stuff because it is something we have all experienced. The more personally touched we are by something, the more we can relate to the familiarity and find it funny. It is the intimate moments of life that can be the most hilarious, because they are so common, yet so often unspoken.
When something really hits a nerve of truth that is usually what is most amusing. The more raw and the more real, the more we can let go of what we hold onto the most: our pride, ego, and desire to seem infallible. Nobody wants to come off as the fool, but in reality, everybody plays the fool…sometime….
