Your relationship with your baby is probably the most one-sided dynamic you will ever be a part of. Except if you are in a relationship with a lion, because you could never really be honest about your feelings out fear of being eaten alive. You know how sensitive lions are…
From the moment your child is born, you are transformed into their servant. You have to cater to their every need, attend to their every desire, and succumb to their every wish if someone screaming in your face while looking you in the eyes makes you feel uncomfortable. But besides your fear of their demanding nature, it is also your love for your child that makes you do everything for them because you want them to be happy. That… and their wrath is terrifying.
But after they hit a certain age, they start to understand you, which at first I didn’t really see how I could use to my advantage. Okay, great, now she can point to her belly button and ask me where the ball is 200 times, but how does this new developmental stage serve my needs? But then I got it. I can ask her to do my favors!
Now The Munch will throw away her diapers… get a napkin and clean a spilled drink, put back things that she pulled out, find my shoes, wash my face, brush my hair, and drive me to the airport. Just kidding, she doesn’t brush my hair.
Point is, I am realizing that she may be a lot more useful than I previously thought! That is until she realizes that going upstairs to get mama’s phone isn’t a fun game but actually kind of annoying.
