Do you ever feel like no matter what is going on in your life, you always want more? That there is always something just beyond the horizon of your desire? Lets say you get your dream job… at first you are happy, but then you want a promotion, to make more money… to have more power. Or you are in love, and you want someone so bad you can taste it. You flirt, you play games, you seduce, until they are yours, and then you find yourself crushing on your co-worker or their best friend?
What is it about humans where it is so hard to feel fully satisfied? Maybe this idea works for Starbucks and their coffees the size of industrial tanks, but does having an abyss of craving inspire us to be more motivated, or more miserable? If we are always looking for what is next, is it possible to appreciate what we have?
I see this tendency in The Munch, and she doesn’t seem to want to philosophize with me about why she is so unsatisfied by her physical limitations. She just grunts.
When all she could do was lay on her back, she wanted me to hold her up so she could sit. Then, when she could sit on her own, she wants me to hold her hands so she can stand. I am willing to bet once she can stand on her own, I am going to develop a hunch back holding her up while she wants to walk around.
Me: Munch! If you want to stand, you gotta figure out how to stand!
Munch: Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Uhhhhhhhh. Meeeeeheeeeeee.
Me: Why isn’t sitting enough? You used to like sitting when I had to support you? Now you can sit like a big girl. Can’t you just have fun sitting?
Munch: Uhhhhhhhhh. Grrrrrrrrrrrr.
So am I helping her out by holding her up to stand? I am showing her what is possible and conditioning her to be more driven? Or am I enabling her? Is she going to be forever discontent with what is in front of her? Or do you think I need to make more friends considering I have serious conversations with someone who thinks chewing on their foot is fun?
