Politics are boring. Real political discussions about policy, infrastructure, economic strategy, military spending, distribution of goods and service… will make the average person turn to heroine to escape the mundane details of how the substructure of society actually functions. Have you ever been to a town meeting, or observed how congress operates? The insides of our political institutions are about as exciting as sitting in traffic.
People don’t really know how to participate in true political discourse because that is not the most available information for the public to review. The news we are most exposed to does not focus on the boring details of how government actually works on an objective level, but instead what is broadcasted is the emotional issues which are purely subjective that everyone can have an opinion about.
There is no need to study macro and microeconomics to have adamant ideas on gay marriage. You don’t need to familiarize yourself with the minutiae of urban planning to feel pro-choice or pro-life. There are no criteria of political science courses to participate in the war on women.
These divisive emotional issues have nothing to do with how our country functions, but they are topics that anyone can have an view on.
Although in America the economy is God, how much actual information about how our economy works is disseminated? Does the average person understand how our financial system has been impacted over the past 3 decades, and what the true issues at hand are? Are people genuinely informed on this issue that they care most about?
In order to have even a quasi understanding of how these systems work you have to sift through complicated rhetoric and terminology. There is no simple analysis that is making it clear for people to truly digest what has happened and what needs to happen for our future. And whose responsibility is it to transform this mind-numbing information into what people actually consider when having a political point of view?
Maybe it is parents? I decided that as a mother it is my obligation to talk about politics to The Munch in a way that familiarizes her with context and objective information. I figured it was my duty as a citizen to raise a being who craves to be an informed member of society. So today we had our first lesson about corporate finance and super PAC’s.
“Hey…. Munch… where are you going? Get back here!”
