It is impossible to know for sure whether masculine and feminine traits are inherent, or socialized and arbitrary attributes. Could you condition a male baby to be feminine, and a female baby to be masculine if you raised them looking like and being treated like the opposite gender? Or would there be an innate propensity pushing them towards what we have classically come to understand as womanly or manly qualities? Do we all share equal amounts of maleness and femaleness and the way we come to grow into our genders is because of what adults deem socially acceptable? Do women cry because it’s tolerated, but boys don’t because they are made to feel embarrassed if they do? Are women more likely to talk about their emotions because it is encouraged by society, where with men it is considered a weakness so they repress them? Doesn’t this paragraph make you think I am super smart of what?
I think the answer to these questions is the same as the answer to all questions. Sort of.
I think a difference between men and women is rooted in our sexuality, experience with sex, and the fact that women have babies. Of course you don’t have to have a baby to feel like a woman because they are many womanly women who don’t have babies, and men who feel like women. In fact, I felt way more like a sexy lady before I was covered in puke and had a baby as a constant accessory. Doesn’t have the same appeal as oversized sunglasses and halter tops. But there are biological differences that make us distinctive and our anatomy affects us. I don’t have a penis that I want to stick in people and flops around against my leg all day reminding me of its existence. I have a vagina tucked in like a suitcase that sometimes lets people in, a womb that can hold a baby, that same vagina that sometimes lets people out, and then boobs that feed them.
But just because I am a girl doesn’t mean I am like all other girls. Sure I cry, talk about my emotions, and find value in seeing a psychic… but there are many types of girls just like there are many types of men. And there is one type of girl that intimidates me, and that is the girlie girl
You see, I have always been a “tomboy” a phrase I don’t understand at all because I know a guy named Tom who is a total pussy. I don’t like dolls. I dress like a 12-year old boy. I can throw a football. I have never had a manicure, or pedicure. When I wear high heels I look like a giraffe walking on stilts. I was never a princess for Halloween, I was a fly… and one year a used tampon, but that wasn’t until I was an adult.
My mom is a girlie girl, and she says the girlie girl gene skips a generation. She is convinced The Munch is a girlie girl in training. Hey Munch… since when did you get your own personality and not just be the person I wanted you to be? Wtf!
